ORGANIZED
The City Of Deerfield Beach Fire and Rescue cadet/explorer program was started in 1980.
It's a function of the Boy Scouts of America and is Explorer Troop # 233.
PURPOSE
To provide an insight into the career opportunities by practical participation in the field of Fire-Rescue.
WHO CAN JOIN
Any teen between the ages of 14-20. They must be physically fit to perform the necessary task of a Fire-fighter-Paramedic.
TRAINING
Cadets receive training in CPR, first aid on the first responder level, search and rescue, hose handling, ladder techniques, ropes and
knots, handling and use of self-contained breathing apparatus, and proper use of most Fire-Rescue equipment.
RIDE ALONG PROGRAM
After completing a three month probationary period in the program, cadets are allowed to ride along on DBFR rescue or engine companies.
Before riding, cadets must obtain a CPR card, basic medical skills, and exhibit the knowledge of location and use of all equipment on the
apparatus they are riding on.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
When cadets “ride along” with the members of DBFR, they will perform the same functions as the Fire Fighter-Paramedics such as: apparatus
and station maintenance, station training, and emergency calls.
On Fire calls, cadets are not allowed to enter the burning building, but they do perform other valuable tasks.
Some of these tasks include laying hose, changing SCBA bottles, salvage and overhaul, and assisting the driver/ engineer with his functions.
On rescue calls, cadets will assist the Paramedics by taking vital signs, setting up IV’s, and gathering patient information, holding traction,
retrieving equipment, and general patient care.
The “ride along” program gives the cadets the unique opportunity to observe and perform with a team of professionals during real emergency situations.
Cadets perform various demonstrations for local events such as Deerfest, Founders Day, and city-wide open house.
MEETINGS
In addition, cadets also tour other fire departments such as Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale Airport, and the Fire Academy.
The cadets meet one night every Thursday at one of the designated Fire Stations called by the lead advisor.
Meetings run from 6:00 p.m. and last till 9:00 p.m. Other meetings are scheduled as needed.
COST
There is a fee of $10.00 once at the beginning of each school year, which pays for registration, supplement insurance,
and additional forms to be processed.
UNIFORMS
After successful completion of the three-month probationary period, cadets are provided with a uniform shirt, pair of pants,
tee shirt, and a belt. Deerfield Beach Fire And Rescue provides turnout
firefighter gear for the cadets to use.
IN SIGHT
Cadets must provide their own pair of all-black boots for ride along's and sneakers for physical fitness training.
The cadet program has been extremely valuable for young people who wish to pursue a career in the Fire-Rescue profession.
To this date multiple members of this program have been hired by The City Of Deerfield Beach Fire
And Rescue and other departments.
SPONSORSHIP
The cadet/explorer post is sponsored by the City of Deerfield Beach Fire
And Rescue. The cadets receive the complete support of the members of Fire
Rescue,
as well as the Fire Chief Tony Stravino.
